The Fort Louvois, also known as the Fort du Chapus, is a fortress located on the Chapus rock, facing the citadel of Château-d'Oléron in the Charente-Maritime department, France. Built in the 17th century by order of Louis XIV to protect the coast, it locked the southern access to the Rochefort arsenal. The fortress includes a five-level keep with a watchtower, moats that fill at high tide, and a causeway that becomes submerged at high tide to connect the fort to the mainland. With its barracks, powder magazine, and other facilities, the fort showcases the ingenuity of military architecture of the time and its strategic importance in coastal defense.
