The Gliridae, also known as Glirids or formerly Myoxidae, constitute a family of medium-sized rodents, including species such as dormice, dormouse, hazel dormouse, and garden dormouse. There are approximately 28 species distributed across 9 genera and three subfamilies. Additionally, over 30 fossil genera dating back to at least the Bartonian period have been discovered. The scientific name Gliridae, now more widely accepted than Myoxidae, was introduced by Lockhart Muirhead in 1819. These rodents exhibit a diversity of habitats and feeding habits, being primarily nocturnal and feeding on fruits, seeds, and insects. The study of fossil genera contributes to our understanding of the evolutionary history of these animals over time.
