The Treaty of Saint-Clair-sur-Epte, signed in 911, was a historic agreement between Charles the Simple, the king of West Francia, and the Viking chieftain Rollo. The key points of the treaty included the recognition of Rollo as the leader of the region that would become Normandy, his conversion to Christianity under the name Robert, and his oath of allegiance to Charles the Simple in exchange for land. This treaty was pivotal in the creation of the Duchy of Normandy, marking the beginning of the region's power and autonomy, as well as the conversion of the Vikings to Christianity in the area.
