Jorge Icaza (1906–1978) was an Ecuadorian novelist, playwright, and short story writer. He is best known for his novel "Huasipungo," published in 1934. "Huasipungo" is a powerful depiction of the exploitation and oppression faced by indigenous people in Ecuador during the early 20th century, particularly under the hacienda system. The novel is considered a classic of Latin American literature and is often studied for its social and political commentary. Icaza's works often explored themes of social injustice, inequality, and the struggles of the marginalized in Ecuadorian society.
