In the south of Austria, a triton, similar to a mermaid in mythology, lived in an underwater cave. Capturing this triton meant having wishes granted in exchange for its freedom. Two men managed to capture it by using a coat covered in tar. The triton then offered them a choice: gold for a year, silver for ten years, or iron forever. The men chose iron, and in return, the triton revealed the location of Erzberg, a mountain abundant in iron ore, thus linking the legend to the discovery of this iconic mountain.
