The month of January derives its name from Janus, the Roman god of beginnings, transitions, and passages. Before embarking on any new endeavor, the Romans would pray for Janus's blessing. He was also the guardian of doors and gateways and served as a mediator between the past and the present. Depicted with two faces looking in opposite directions, Janus symbolized the ability to see both the past and the future. Moreover, he ruled over dawn, marking the beginning of a new day and symbolizing fresh starts and renewal. An opulent temple was dedicated to him in ancient Rome, where the doors would be opened at the outset of each new war. This opening of the doors signified the end of peace and allowed the Romans to enter and plead for victory. This connection between the month of January, Janus, and the ritual of the doors illustrates how religious beliefs were intertwined with the daily life and political events of ancient Rome.
