The Gregorian calendar is the solar calendar currently used in most countries around the world. It was introduced by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582 to replace the Julian calendar. The Gregorian calendar is based on a year of 365 days divided into 12 months, with a leap year adding an extra day (February 29th) every four years to compensate for the extra time needed for the Earth's rotation around the sun. This calendar is widely used for civil and religious purposes.
