Stony corals, also known as hard corals or scleractinian corals, are reef-building organisms that form the structure of coral reefs. They secrete a hard exoskeleton made of calcium carbonate, which shapes the reef. These corals live in colonies of polyps, which host symbiotic algae providing energy through photosynthesis. Coral reefs provide habitat and protection for numerous marine species, but they are threatened by climate change, pollution, and overfishing. Conservation efforts are underway to protect these vital marine ecosystems.
