Pelagia noctiluca, commonly known as the pelagic jellyfish or mauve stinger, is a species of jellyfish belonging to the phylum Cnidaria, class Scyphozoa, and family Pelagiidae. This exclusively pelagic species forms large shoals consisting of hundreds or even thousands of individuals, moving with the ocean currents. Pelagia noctiluca is widely distributed in temperate and warm waters worldwide. These jellyfish are known for their bioluminescence, often creating spectacular displays at night. However, their sting can be painful to humans, and their proliferation can disrupt fishing activities and pose risks to swimmers.
