Godfrey of Bouillon, a leader of the First Crusade, is celebrated as a chaste and bold knight. In 1095, he answered the call of Pope Urban II and joined the Crusader army. After a challenging journey along the Rhine and Danube rivers, they reached Constantinople before heading to Jerusalem. The army consisted of around 50,000 men, including 7,000 knights. After three years, in 1099, they captured Jerusalem, concluding a month-long siege and resulting in violent retaliatory acts against Jewish and Muslim inhabitants. Godfrey of Bouillon became the first ruler of the Kingdom of Jerusalem but passed away in 1100. The history is complex, surrounded by controversies and differing interpretations. The events of the First Crusade reflect the intricate dynamics of that medieval period.
