Maximilian I, born in 1459, was a complex figure from the late Middle Ages. His marriage to Mary of Burgundy granted him the title of Duke of Burgundy and sovereign of the Order of the Golden Fleece. Despite being part of the noble elite, Maximilian made controversial decisions, such as the expulsion of Jews from Styria and Carinthia, driven by political pressure and personal interests. Despite these questionable actions, he was also a Renaissance man, fluent in seven languages and a patron of the arts, highlighting the complexity of historical leaders.
