The Teutonic Order, established in 1190 in Jerusalem to provide medical care during the Crusades, evolved into a military power in Central and Eastern Europe, establishing monastic states. After military defeats in the 14th century, it refocused on religious and charitable activities. Internal reforms transformed the Order into a charitable organization with members becoming regular canons in 1929. Today, based in Vienna, the Teutonic Order focuses on humanitarian efforts worldwide.
