In 2006, Austria assumed the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union from January 1st to June 30th. During this period, Austria focused on several priorities: supporting accession negotiations with Western Balkan countries and Turkey, promoting intercultural dialogue to enhance mutual understanding, discussing energy and environmental issues, and strengthening ties with neighboring countries of the EU. As the president, Austria chaired Council meetings and represented the EU in external relations.
