In Austria, universal male suffrage was established in the early 20th century, in 1907, for legislative elections in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, allowing all men over 24 years old to vote. After World War I and the creation of the Republic of Austria in 1918, universal male suffrage was officially established in the new country. However, the right to vote for women was only granted in 1919, marking a step toward greater democratic representation. Since then, Austria has continued to develop its democratic system to include broader and more equitable citizen participation in the electoral process.
