The Tyrolean Rebellion of 1809 was an uprising by peasants in Tyrol against Bavarian rule, which was a vassal of the French Empire. After Austria's defeat in 1805, Tyrol was ceded to Bavaria, causing resentment due to centralizing and anti-religious policies. Supported by Vienna, the peasants, led by Andreas Hofer, rebelled in 1809, achieving victories against French and Bavarian forces. Despite early successes, the rebellion was eventually crushed after several months of fighting, leaving a lasting mark on Tyrolean history and making Andreas Hofer a symbol of the struggle for Tyrolean independence.
