The Austrian Armed Forces, or Bundesheer, were officially established in 1955, shortly after the end of World War II. Their creation stemmed from the Austrian State Treaty of 1955, also known as the Treaty of Vienna, which restored Austria's sovereignty after World War II and established its permanent neutrality. Prior to this, Austria was occupied by the Allies and was not allowed to maintain independent armed forces. The signing of this treaty allowed Austria to form its own armed forces to ensure its defense while strictly adhering to its neutrality.
