Ankylosaurus is an extinct genus of herbivorous ornithischian dinosaurs belonging to the family Ankylosauridae. It lived approximately 68 to 66 million years ago, during the Late Cretaceous period, in North America. Its name means "stiff lizard" in reference to its heavily armored body. Although no complete skeleton has been found, Ankylosaurus is often regarded as the archetype of armored dinosaurs, with its clubbed tail. It went extinct during the major extinction event at the end of the Cretaceous. Its single species, Ankylosaurus magniventris, was described by Barnum Brown in 1908.
