The striped hyena (Hyaena hyaena) is a hyena species belonging to the Hyaenidae family. Found in Africa, the Middle East, Central Asia, and India, it is characterized by its beige coat with black stripes, a massive head, slender legs, a mane along the spine, and a bushy tail. Smaller than the spotted hyena, it weighs between 21 and 41 kg. Primarily a scavenger, it can also hunt smaller prey. Social in nature, it lives in small family groups and communicates through various vocalizations. Gestation lasts about 90 days, with litters of two to four cubs. Playing a crucial ecological role by eliminating carcasses, the striped hyena faces threats such as habitat loss and human persecution.
