The Hospitallers, founded in Jerusalem in 1099 by the Benedictine monk Gerard Tum to care for sick, poor, and wounded pilgrims in the Holy Land, initially served as a charitable institution. However, as early as 1130, the Order expanded its role to include military aspects, introducing armed brothers. They provided military escort for pilgrims and, starting in 1136, seized control of strategic fortresses in the Holy Land. Thus, beyond their charitable and religious functions, the Hospitallers developed a significant entrepreneurial and military role, shaping the development of Western hospitals and influencing politics and security in the region.
